Getting started
How do we start a project with EZ Volt?
Send us your plans or a description of the home through the contact page, or call. A system designer will reply within one business day to schedule a walkthrough or a plan review. From there you receive a written scope and an itemized proposal, and nothing is ordered until you approve it.
Do you work on existing homes or only new construction?
Both. New construction lets us prewire everything before drywall, which is ideal. For existing homes we use wireless lighting and shades, fish cable through attics and soffits, and reuse existing wiring wherever it is sound. Most retrofits require no wall repair.
How long does a typical installation take?
A lighting or shade package in an existing home is often one to two weeks on site. A whole-home retrofit runs three to six weeks. New construction follows the builder's schedule: a few days at framing for prewire, then a commissioning period of two to six weeks before move-in, depending on the size of the system.
Which areas do you serve?
Miami-Dade first: Miami Beach, Coral Gables, Brickell, Key Biscayne, Coconut Grove, Pinecrest and the surrounding neighborhoods, from our office in Edgewater. We also take on projects in Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton, typically new construction and major renovations.
Control4 & automation
What does Control4 actually do that separate apps do not?
It makes the systems act together. A single tap or voice command can dim the lights, drop the shades, start the projector and set the volume. It also gives every family member the same interface on remotes, keypads, touchscreens and phones instead of a different app for each device.
Can Control4 work with the smart devices we already own?
Usually. Control4 integrates with more than 16,000 devices, including Sonos, Lutron, Apple TV, Roku, Ring, Nest, Ecobee, Yale and most TVs and receivers. During the walkthrough we list what you have and confirm what integrates directly, what needs a small bridge and what is better replaced.
Is it complicated to use?
It should not be, and that is the point of good programming. We build a handful of scenes around how you live, put them on a keypad by the door and on the remote in each room, and train everyone in the house. If something feels complicated after 30 days we come back and simplify it.
What happens if the internet goes down or the power blinks?
Everything local keeps working: lights, keypads, remotes, shades and local music. Only streaming and remote access depend on the connection. Core equipment sits on battery backup so a power blink does not reboot the house, and the system recovers on its own after a longer outage.
Cameras & security
Will the cameras record during a power outage or hurricane?
Yes, for as long as the battery backup lasts. We put the recorder, network switch and router on a UPS sized to the home, and on homes with a generator we tie the equipment room to a generator circuit so recording continues through an extended outage.
Is there a monthly fee for the cameras?
No. Recording is local on your own NVR and remote viewing is included. Optional services such as encrypted cloud backup of event clips or professional monitoring with dispatch are available for a monthly fee if you want them.
How is this different from the doorbell camera we bought online?
Resolution, night performance, reliability and privacy. Professional cameras capture faces and plates in 4K, see in near-darkness, record to a recorder in your home rather than only to a cloud service, and are wired over PoE so there are no batteries to charge or Wi-Fi drops. AI detection also reduces false alerts dramatically.
Can we see the cameras on the TV and from our phones?
Yes. Camera views appear on Control4 touchscreens, on any TV in the house, and in the app anywhere in the world. When the gate or door intercom rings, the live view can pop up on the TV you are watching.
Network & Wi-Fi
Why is our Wi-Fi so bad in a concrete home?
Concrete block, impact glass and stucco over metal lath absorb and reflect the signal. One router in a closet cannot cover a large CBS home. The fix is several ceiling-mounted UniFi access points connected by wire to a central switch, placed from a floor-plan design rather than guessed.
Why do we need more than the cable company router?
The provider's router is built to be cheap and to cover an apartment. A smart home with 80 to 200 connected devices needs a real gateway with a firewall, managed PoE switches for cameras and access points, and separate networks for family, guests, cameras and IoT devices. We build that on Ubiquiti UniFi. We keep the provider's modem and put your equipment behind it.
Do you offer internet backup?
Yes. We can add a second provider such as fiber plus cable, or a cellular 5G failover, so a single outage does not take the house offline. This matters most for cameras, remote access and homes managed from elsewhere.
Can you fix problems remotely?
Most of them. We monitor the network and connected devices with your permission and can reboot, update and reconfigure remotely. Many issues are resolved before you notice them, and a site visit is reserved for hardware problems.
New construction & prewire
When should we involve EZ Volt in a new build?
At the permit set, before electrical rough-in. That is when the rack room, conduit and keypad boxes can be placed at no real cost and coordinated with the electrician and lighting designer. Joining at framing still works; joining after drywall is where compromises begin.
Do we need to prewire before drywall if we are not sure what we want?
Yes. Prewire is how you keep your options open. We run cable and conduit to every plausible speaker, TV, camera, shade and access point location so you can decide after move-in without opening walls. The wire is inexpensive; the access is not.
Do you work with our builder and electrician?
Yes. We operate as the low-voltage subcontractor, attend coordination meetings, produce a drawing set and stay on the construction schedule. EZ Volt grew out of EZ BH Projects, a Miami custom home builder, so we understand how a jobsite runs.
What do we receive at the end of a prewire?
Every cable tested, certified and labeled at both ends, a rack location with power and ventilation, and an as-built cable map you keep. Any integrator, now or in twenty years, can pick it up and know exactly what is in the walls.
Pricing & support
How much does a smart home system cost?
It depends entirely on scope. A lighting-and-audio starter package for a few rooms typically starts in the mid four figures. Whole-home systems for a new construction estate are scoped after a plan review and vary with the number of rooms, shades and AV zones. Every project receives an itemized proposal before anything is ordered.
What does ongoing support cost?
Every installation includes a warranty period and remote support. After that, you can pay per visit or choose a service plan that includes remote monitoring, software updates, priority scheduling and discounted on-site rates. We recommend a plan for larger homes and second residences.
Can you take over a system another company installed?
Yes. We start with an audit of the rack and wiring, then give you a written plan: what to keep, what to replace and what it costs. Control4, Lutron and most network systems can be transferred to us as your dealer of record.
Do you work with condo and homeowner associations?
Regularly. We prepare the insurance certificates, contractor registration, work schedules and product specifications your association requires, and we follow building rules on hours, noise and elevator use.
