Control4 Panelized Lighting vs Wall Dimmers: What a Miami Home Should Choose

Every lighting control conversation on a Miami build reaches the same fork: put the dimming in panels, or put it in the walls. Both are Control4. Both give you scenes and schedules. They differ in where the hardware lives, what the electrician wires, what the walls look like, and when the decision has to be made. Here is how we help clients choose.

What each approach actually is

A wall dimmer replaces the switch in the box you already have. It dims the load wired to that box, talks to the Control4 processor wirelessly, and can be pressed like a normal switch. It is the retrofit product, and it is very good.

Panelized lighting moves the dimming out of the wall. Each lighting circuit is home-run to a lighting panel, usually mounted next to the equipment rack, where dimmer and relay modules control it. The wall box carries only a keypad on a low-voltage cable, with engraved buttons for the scenes you use in that room. One keypad by the front door replaces a bank of six switches, and the electrician wires fewer, cleaner boxes.

Both are native Control4 and both integrate with shades, climate, audio, cameras and security in the same scenes. Lutron HomeWorks is the equivalent panelized system from Lutron, and we specify it where a project calls for it, but for most Control4 homes the Control4 panels keep everything on one processor and one dealer.

The rows that decide most projects are the deadline and the electrician scope. Panelized only makes sense while the walls are open and while the electrician can still wire home-runs. After drywall, wall dimmers win almost by default.

When panelized is the right answer

We recommend panels whenever three things are true: the project is at or before electrical rough-in, the home has roughly sixty or more controlled loads, and the owner cares about how the walls look. Custom homes in Miami Beach, Coral Gables and Pinecrest usually check all three. A large great room with cove lighting, recessed cans in three groups, pendants and landscape lighting might need eight circuits; with panels, that room has one keypad.

Panels also age better. Dimmer modules sit in a conditioned rack room instead of a hot wall box over a kitchen range, and when a module fails in year twelve it is a rack-room swap rather than a painter and an electrician. The load schedule we produce with the lighting designer becomes the map for every future change.

When wall dimmers are the right answer

Wall dimmers are not the consolation prize. They are the correct choice for a finished home where nobody wants to open plaster, for a condo where the slab and the association rule out new wiring, for a scope of ten to forty loads, and for a phased project where lighting comes before a future renovation. Control4 wireless dimmers and Lutron RadioRA 3 both install in existing boxes, both dim modern LED fixtures well when matched properly, and both run the same scenes from a keypad, the app and voice.

  • Coral Gables and Coconut Grove homes with plaster or coral stone walls, where fishing new cable is a project in itself.
  • Brickell, Edgewater and Sunny Isles condos, where circuits cannot be rerouted and boxes stay where they are.
  • Homes that want lighting control this month rather than after a renovation.
  • Rooms added to a panelized home later, such as a converted garage or a new cabana.

The last case matters: a home can be mostly panelized with a few wireless dimmers on the edges, all under one Control4 processor and one app. The system does not care which side of the wall the dimming happens on.

What changes for the electrician

The electrician is the person most affected by the choice. With wall dimmers, nothing changes: switch legs go to boxes, we swap the switches at trim. With panels, every controlled circuit runs from the fixture to the panel location instead of to a switch, and the wall boxes become keypad boxes on low-voltage cable. That means a load schedule before rough-in, agreed panel locations with enough wall space and a dedicated feed, and a division of scope that says who terminates what.

Dimming quality is about matching, not location

Owners sometimes assume panels dim better than wall devices. They dim the same way. What matters is matching the dimmer type (forward-phase, reverse-phase, 0-10V) to the LED fixture and driver, and verifying the pair dims smoothly to the bottom of the range without flicker. We test the exact fixtures the designer specified against the proposed module or dimmer before rough-in, and we flag any fixture that will not dim cleanly so it can be swapped while there is still time.

Tunable white and circadian lighting work with either approach. In a panelized home the drivers are controlled from the panel; in a wall-dimmer home they are controlled from a keypad and a small in-fixture controller. The scene the family sees is identical.

What it costs

On an open-wall build, panelized lighting for a whole home typically starts in the low five figures for the control side, with the number driven by load count, keypad count and keypad finishes. Per load, panels become cheaper than wall dimmers somewhere around sixty loads, because the electrician's simpler boxes and the module pricing scale better than one device per circuit.

In a finished home, wall dimmers typically start in the mid four figures for the main living areas and scale with the number of circuits. A whole-home wireless retrofit lands in a similar range to a panelized new build, with the money going to labor and devices rather than to panels and home-run wiring.

Questions people ask about this

Can we mix panelized lighting and wall dimmers in one house?

Yes, and it is common. Panels handle the bulk of a new build and wireless dimmers cover additions, outbuildings or rooms that were finished before the decision was made. Both sit under one Control4 processor and behave identically in scenes and the app.

What happens to the lights if the Control4 processor is down?

Keypads and panels keep local control of their circuits, so lights still switch and dim from the wall. Only scenes that span systems, schedules and remote control wait for the processor. Wall dimmers behave the same way: they work as dimmers with or without the processor.

Do panels take a lot of space?

A typical whole-home system uses two to four panels the size of a large electrical panel, mounted on a plywood backboard next to the rack. We plan the wall space, ventilation and a dedicated circuit into the rack room during design.

Is Lutron HomeWorks better than Control4 panels?

Both are excellent panelized systems. Lutron has the deepest keypad finish catalog and is unmatched for very large lighting-only scopes; Control4 panels keep lighting, shades, AV, cameras and security on one processor and one dealer. We specify either based on the project and integrate Lutron with Control4 when that is the right combination.
