Why the water side is different
Three things make the dock harder than the driveway. There is no street light, so the scene at 2am is black water and a dim dock. Everything is exposed to salt spray, direct sun and wind-driven rain, which destroys ordinary camera housings and mounts within a season or two. And the dock is often 60 to 150 feet from the house, past a pool and a lawn, which means real wiring rather than a camera stuck to the soffit.
Coverage also has to answer specific questions: who tied up at the dock, whether a boat lift moved, whether someone came over the seawall, and whether the vessel is still where it was. A single wide camera on the back of the house answers none of them at night.
Placement that actually captures something
We plan the water side on a site plan with fields of view drawn, the same way we plan the front. The pattern that works on most lots:
- One camera at each end of the seawall, mounted on the house corner, a pergola or a piling, looking along the wall so anyone climbing it crosses the frame side-on.
- A wide camera over the dock and boat lift, mounted high enough to see the deck and the vessel, low enough to capture faces at the gangway.
- A camera facing out over the water from the dock end, so an approaching boat is recorded before it arrives.
- A camera covering the path from the dock to the house, usually the pool deck or a side yard, to tie the sequence together.
- Where the lot is long or the dock is on a canal bend, a PTZ camera that patrols between presets and zooms on motion.
Faces and hull registration numbers need pixels. We size lenses for each position so a person at the gangway or a transom at the dock fills enough of the frame to be identified, which is the difference between footage and evidence.

All exterior cameras on the water side get sealed housings rated for immersion-level rain, stainless or coated mounts, and sealed cable entries. UniFi Protect, Luma and Axis all have models built for this; the mount and the sealing are usually the part that fails first, so we specify those as carefully as the camera.
Getting power and data to the dock
The dock cameras run on PoE, so one cable carries power and video and there is no exterior power adapter to corrode. The run from the rack to the dock is the engineering problem: it goes through the house, under or around the pool deck, across the lawn and along the dock, and it must be protected from water, roots and lightning.
- Buried conduit
A sealed conduit from the house to the dock head, installed by directional boring under hardscape where possible, with a pull string and spare capacity for a future access point or audio.
- Fiber or outdoor-rated copper
On runs over about 250 feet, or wherever lightning risk is high, single-mode fiber to a small sealed enclosure at the dock, with a PoE switch there feeding the cameras. Shorter runs use outdoor-rated, gel-filled Cat6A.
- Surge protection
Surge devices on every copper line at both ends. A lightning strike on a dock piling will otherwise travel straight into the rack.
- Sealed terminations
Every connection at the dock inside a sealed enclosure or a sealed camera base, with drip loops and marine-grade tape. Wire nuts and open junction boxes do not survive a summer.
Recording and alerts that do not cry wolf
Dock cameras record continuously to the NVR in the rack, on a UPS and, where available, the generator circuit, so a storm outage does not mean a blind night. Analytics are tuned for the water: person and vehicle detection on, small-animal and water-motion suppression on, and detection zones drawn so a passing boat in the canal is not an alert but a boat tying up is.
Owners who are away for the season get the same alerts on their phone, with a clip, and can pull up the dock on demand. Integration with Control4 puts the dock camera on the touchscreen and the TV when a detection fires, and can turn on the dock lighting at the same moment.
The dock is more than cameras
The same conduit that carries the camera cable serves the rest of the dock: an outdoor access point so phones and the boat's electronics have Wi-Fi, landscape audio for the deck, low-voltage lighting control for the dock and pilings, and a contact sensor on the boat lift. Lighting is also part of coverage: a camera that triggers the dock lights at night both records better and announces that the property is watched.
Questions people ask about this
Will the cameras see anything at night over the water?
Yes, with the right sensors and a little light. Low-light cameras with wide dynamic range hold detail against dark water and the glare of a boat's lights, infrared covers the near field, and dock lighting triggered by motion turns a silhouette into an identifiable person.
How long do dock cameras last in salt air?
Properly specified and sealed, five to seven years is typical. The failures we see on other installations are almost always the mount, the cable entry and the power adapter, not the camera itself, which is why those are the parts we specify and seal most carefully.
Can I add dock cameras to a finished property without trenching?
Often. Existing conduit for dock power or lighting can sometimes carry a fiber or outdoor Cat6A run, and directional boring installs a new conduit under a pool deck with two small pits rather than a trench. Wireless bridges are the last resort and we use them only where nothing else is possible.
Is a PTZ camera worth it?
On a long dock, a canal bend or a wide bay frontage, yes: one PTZ with presets and auto-tracking covers what would take three fixed cameras. On a compact dock, fixed cameras are simpler and record every angle at once, which a PTZ cannot.
