Control4
Control4 is a full automation platform: lighting (including its own panelized system), shades, climate, audio, video, cameras, locks, intercom and security on one processor with one app and one remote per room. Its catalog of third-party integrations is the largest in the industry, its Neeo remote is the one guests figure out on their own, and its dealer network is deep, which matters when you want a second opinion in ten years.
Weaknesses: the interface is consistent rather than bespoke, and it needs a good dealer to program it well. A poorly programmed Control4 system is as frustrating as any other. Strength: with a good dealer it is the most cost-effective way to run an entire home on one platform.
Our take: the default for most Miami homes, from Brickell condos to Miami Beach estates. It is what we install when the goal is one system that does everything reliably.
Lutron HomeWorks and RadioRA 3
Lutron makes the best lighting control and shading hardware in the world, and it has for decades. HomeWorks is the panelized system for large new builds; RadioRA 3 is the wireless system that installs into existing boxes. Keypad finishes, dimming quality and shade precision are the benchmark everyone else is measured against.
Weaknesses: Lutron is a lighting and shade company, not a whole-home automation platform. Cameras, AV and locks need something else on top, which is why Lutron and Control4 are so often installed together.
Our take: the choice for lighting-only scopes, designer-driven interiors where keypad finish matters, and very large lighting loads. We install Lutron shades on many Control4 homes.
Savant
Savant grew up in high-end AV and it shows: elegant interfaces, strong video distribution and a polished app. It has expanded into lighting and energy, and it integrates well with Lutron. Savant homes tend to be media-first luxury homes with a strong design brief.
Weaknesses: a smaller dealer base in South Florida, higher cost for equivalent scope, and a history of platform transitions that left some older systems stranded. Strength: when the brief is a beautiful media experience, Savant delivers it.
Crestron Home
Crestron built the automation category and still dominates the very top of it: large estates, yachts, commercial buildings. Crestron Home is the residential platform, and it can do essentially anything a programmer is paid to make it do. That is its strength and its risk.
Weaknesses: cost, complexity, and dependence on the original programmer. A Crestron home with custom code and a dealer who has moved on is the most common takeover call we get. Strength: unmatched flexibility for estates that need it and can staff for it.
How to choose
- Start from scope, not brand
List what the system must control. If the answer includes lighting, shades, cameras, locks and AV, a whole-home platform (Control4, Savant or Crestron) is required and Lutron alone is not enough.
- Decide who supports it
Ask any integrator what happens if they close. A platform with a deep local dealer base and structured, documented programming is far easier to transfer. This favors Control4 and Lutron.
- Match the budget to the platform
For most homes under about 10,000 square feet, Control4 with Lutron shades delivers the same result as the premium platforms at a lower cost. Above that, and with a dedicated staff, Crestron's flexibility can be worth it.
- Insist on a design
Every one of these platforms is only as good as its design and programming. A written scope, low-voltage drawings and a programming plan matter more than the logo.
Questions people ask about this
Can Control4 and Lutron work together?
Yes, and it is one of the most common combinations we install. Lutron handles lighting and shades natively; Control4 integrates them into scenes with audio, video, cameras and security.
Can you take over a Crestron or Savant system?
Usually. We audit the rack and wiring, keep what is sound, and either reprogram the existing platform or move the home to Control4 while reusing the cabling and many devices.
Which platform is best for a condo?
Control4 or Lutron RadioRA 3. Both install wirelessly into existing boxes, both integrate battery or wired shades, and Control4 adds the audio, video and intercom integration condos usually want.
Is Apple HomeKit or Google Home a real alternative?
They are excellent for a handful of devices and as a voice front end. They are not a substitute for a professional platform in a home with dozens of lighting loads, shades, cameras and AV zones, mainly because there is no dealer accountable for making it all work together.
